McAfee has a great malware scanner, excellent web protection, and a user-friendly VPN. The antivirus scanner offers effective anti-malware protection (it detected all of the malware samples I hid on my device). It also comes with features like anti-phishing and identity theft protection to protect you on the web.
McAfee’s Safe Connect VPN is pretty good. While it doesn’t come with many features, it has an intuitive dashboard that makes it easy to navigate. In terms of security, it has 256-bit AES encryption and a kill switch, and its no-logs policy is independently audited and confirmed every year.
You get a couple of convenient connection options. In addition to opting to connect manually, you can automatically connect to a server on non-secure Wi-Fi and LAN networks or just on Wi-Fi networks. This way, if you use the Wi-Fi at your hotel or the gym, McAfee Safe Connect will instantly launch on your device. Plus, you can add a list of trusted networks like your home network.
However, there are a handful of things that I don’t like about McAfee Safe Connect VPN. 4. Bitdefender — Advanced Antivirus Scanner With a Very Fast VPN
Bitdefender has an excellent malware scanner and one of the fastest VPNs on this list. The cloud-based virus scanner uses machine learning along with traditional signature-based scanning, which provides 100% malware detection while keeping the impact on your system to a minimum in terms of performance, with full-system scans averaging 21% CPU usage and less than 1% during background scans.
The VPN is free with some of Bitdefender’s antivirus bundles and is powered by standalone VPN provider Hotspot Shield. But I’m not a big fan of the free version — you only get 200 MB per day, and there’s no option to pick a server manually. MacKeeper is a lightweight antivirus for Macs that includes a secure and fast VPN. The integrated antivirus scanner detected most of my malware samples, but unfortunately, MacKeeper can’t detect rootkits.
MacKeeper’s VPN, Private Connect, is good for general browsing. It includes unlimited data, has a minimalistic, user-friendly dashboard, uses a secure protocol (OpenVPN), and comes with DNS and WebRTC leak protection. It also has nearly 300 servers in 50+ countries, allowing you to connect to a server nearby to get the fastest speeds. That said, Private Connect isn’t as fast as Bitdefender or TotalAV.
The suite also offers a great set of security and performance tools for Macs. Malwarebytes is a good and intuitive antivirus program with a fast VPN, but it lacks many of the features that other top antiviruses like Norton, Bitdefender, and TotalAV offer. Its antivirus scanner uses a large malware database and heuristic analysis to detect malware. In my tests, it detected about 95% of my malware samples.
Malwarebytes’s Privacy VPN has 500+ servers in 40+ countries and uses WireGuard, one of the fastest protocols out there. It isn’t as fast as some other VPNs, but I had really fast speeds for browsing, gaming, and watching HD videos on local servers. However, on distant servers, websites loaded in 2–4 seconds, and I experienced some lag playing video games.
When it comes to antivirus software, Malwarebytes provides effective real-time protection that continuously monitors your system to detect and block threats immediately. 7. Avira — Lightweight Antivirus With a Good Torrenting VPN
Avira has a powerful antivirus scanner and a great suite of cybersecurity features, including a VPN (Phantom VPN) that’s very easy to use and good for P2P traffic.
Avira’s Phantom VPN uses 256-bit AES encryption and has a strict no-logs policy. It also includes DNS leak protection, supporting IPv4 and IPv6 traffic to prevent data leaks. There’s a kill switch (available only on Windows with the Pro version), too, that automatically blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops, adding an extra layer of security.
Phantom VPN is great for torrenting — it provides unlimited data, supports P2P traffic on all its servers (including in the US), and works with top torrent clients. It has servers spread evenly worldwide, allowing most users to find a nearby server for the fastest download speeds. I connected to a local server, and it took me about the same amount of time to download a 20 GB file as it took me to download the same file with TotalAV Safe Browsing VPN. 8. Kaspersky — Antivirus With Good Parental Controls and a Decent VPN for Streaming
Kaspersky has good anti-malware protection, a good streaming VPN run by Hotspot Shield, and some of the best parental controls. Its malware scanner uses a virus database plus cloud-based machine learning to find malware, and it found 100% of my malware samples in testing.
However, Kaspersky’s free VPN is limited to mobile (Android and iOS) and capped at 300 MB per day. For an unlimited VPN across desktop and mobile, you’ll need to opt for the Kaspersky Plus or Kaspersky Premium plans.
The premium VPN offers 2,000+ servers in 30+ countries and has split-tunneling and a kill switch. It also supports torrenting on all of its servers, and you can use it to protect your smart home devices as well.
Kaspersky also has user-friendly parental control features like content filtering for apps and websites, setting up usage limits for all devices, and location tracking for mobile devices. Panda offers a really good malware scanner plus a user-friendly and fast VPN. It also has some unique features. For instance, the USB protection feature scans external devices for malware as soon as they’re connected. Also, Panda’s Rescue Kit allows you to create a bootable USB drive to clean infected computers.
Panda VPN is powered by a standalone VPN called Hotspot Shield. Thanks to its Hydra protocol, websites loaded almost instantly across all servers, and I could download files fast (Panda supports P2P traffic on servers in all 20+ countries).
I also like that the VPN is easy to download and install (it takes less than 3 minutes on any supported device), and I never had a problem finding or connecting to a server. Since the apps don’t have many features, they’re also simple to navigate, so they’re a good option for people who have never used a VPN.

10. Trend Micro — Good for Streaming With Fast Speeds
Trend Micro has an effective malware scanner and VPN (Proxy One Pro) that’s good for streaming. The malware scanner performed well in my tests, catching the majority of malware samples. I barely noticed any slowdowns on my computer while running the scans, which was even better.
Trend Micro’s VPN, VPN Proxy One Pro, includes an ad blocker and can automatically turn on when it detects an unsecured Wi-Fi network or specific networks you choose, like your home Wi-Fi. Although the company doesn’t specifically advertise leak protection, my tests showed no leaks, with only the VPN’s IP address visible.
VPN Proxy One Pro maintains excellent speeds because it uses WireGuard, one of the fastest protocols available and my go-to choice for speed and security. It is also one of the few VPNs from an antivirus program to include WireGuard in its protocol options.
However, VPN Proxy One Pro doesn’t have a kill switch, so your data could be exposed if the VPN connection drops. Its privacy policy is also a concern since it logs your location, session duration, in-app purchases, and websites you visit. This is more data than most people would be comfortable with, especially compared to VPNs with strict no-logs policies like ExpressVPN. The privacy policy’s vague language makes it hard to understand what’s being tracked and how it’s used.
