Short on time? Here’s the best VPN that supports WireGuard in 2024:

  • 🥇 Private Internet Access : Private Internet Access is my favorite VPN with WireGuard support in 2024. It solves the core privacy issues with the WireGuard protocol, provides very fast speeds, and is really secure. It’s also one of the most customizable VPNs on the market and is great for streaming and torrenting.

I like using WireGuard over most other VPN protocols since it’s faster and more efficient and is easier to audit and keep secure. It also handles network changes better, is available on more device types (like Linux), and is better for mobile battery life compared to more code-heavy protocols.

But it wasn’t built with privacy in mind. The protocol can’t dynamically assign VPN IP address to users, and it also requires indefinite user IP logging by default. So, this could force VPN providers to store information about your geolocation, which compromises your privacy.

So I’ve created a list of good WireGuard VPNs that address this problem. The providers below are very privacy-friendly, really fast, and offer great support for streaming and torrenting. My favorite of the bunch is Private Internet Access. It has excellent privacy and security, offers very fast speeds, and is super affordable. Private Internet Access (PIA) is my top WireGuard VPN because of its fast speeds, strong security and privacy, and excellent customizability. I really like it because it addresses the core privacy issue with the WireGuard protocol by assigning random IP addresses.

🥇1. Private Internet Access — Best VPN That Supports WireGuard in 2024

The provider also performed very well during my speed tests. It maintained fast speeds on both local and distant servers. In my tests, websites and videos loaded instantly, and I was able to stream HD videos without any buffering.

I love how PIA is flexible with WireGuard. Most VPNs don’t let you make changes to how the protocol operates, but PIA has a few different settings you can change. One of the best is the Connection Timeout, which you can set to 30s, 1 minute, or 2 minutes. You can also ask PIA to use smaller packets, which is useful on unstable networks, larger packets, which is more efficient, or the Automatic setting that chooses for you based on network performance.

🥇1. Private Internet Access — Best VPN That Supports WireGuard in 2024

PIA also has connection automation rules for various network types that help you automate your WireGuard use. For example, you can set the VPN to automatically turn on when you connect to your home network, or set it to disconnect on a work network that blocks the VPN.

Private Internet Access offers very cheap prices, with plans starting at just $2.03 / month. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out risk-free.

Bottom Line:

Private Internet Access is the best VPN with WireGuard support in 2024. It solves WireGuard’s privacy problem, maintains extremely fast speeds on local and distant servers, and is incredibly customizable. All of its plans are backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost VPN addresses WireGuard’s privacy issues just like Private Internet Access — it assigns dynamic IP addresses to users and deletes these addresses every few minutes.

It’s also one of the best VPNs for streaming. It has dedicated streaming servers in 20+ countries optimized for 50+ streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer.

🥈2. CyberGhost VPN — Great WireGuard VPN With Dedicated Streaming Servers

I like that the VPN is very fast, which makes it ideal for all online activities. In my tests, websites and videos loaded instantly, and I didn’t experience any buffering when watching YouTube videos in HD. It was faster than the other available protocols, including OpenVPN and IKEv2.

🥈2. CyberGhost VPN — Great WireGuard VPN With Dedicated Streaming Servers

Unfortunately, there are no customization options for the WireGuard protocol like you get with Private Internet Access.

CyberGhost VPN is reasonably priced, with its longest-term plan starting at $2.19 / month. All plans come with a money-back guarantee — 45 days for long-term plans and 14 days for the shortest plan.

CyberGhost: Save 83% on the 24-month plan + FREE months!
You can save 83% if you act right now.

Bottom Line:

CyberGhost VPN is an excellent WireGuard VPN for streaming. It addresses WireGuard’s inherent privacy issues and has dedicated streaming servers that work with all major streaming services. It also provides fast speeds, but it doesn’t let you customize your WireGuard connection. CyberGhost backs all long-term purchases with a 45-day money-back guarantee.

NordVPN’s proprietary NordLynx protocol is built around the WireGuard protocol, which solves WireGuard’s privacy problem by using a double NAT (Network Address Translation) system. In short, this ensures that your data is never stored on a VPN server.

🥉3. NordVPN — Great Wireguard Support Via Its NordLynx Protocol

I got really good speeds with NordVPN using NordLynx. On local servers, websites and videos loaded immediately, and HD videos didn’t buffer. I experienced only minor slowdowns when connected to distant servers — websites and videos took 2–3 seconds to load and HD videos took about 5–6 seconds to buffer at the start but played without interruptions afterward.

🥉3. NordVPN — Great Wireguard Support Via Its NordLynx Protocol

NordVPN works with all major streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. What’s more, it also comes with 4,500+ P2P servers in 45+ countries and has SOCKS5 proxy support.

NordVPN’s plans start at $2.99 / month, and all purchases are backed with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Surfshark’s apps are very simple to use — the interface is clean and simple to navigate and the VPN comes with a lot of convenient features that make it really easy to connect to a server. For example, I like its Recently Used section that lists the last 3 server locations you connected to for quick access.

Surfshark solves WireGuard’s privacy issues with a double NAT system. Plus, the VPN doesn’t store your IP address (according to its audited no-logs policy), and it assigns you a dynamic IP address when you connect to its servers. The IP Rotator feature is unique, as it provides extra privacy by frequently changing your IP address without disconnecting you from the VPN server.

4. Surfshark — Affordable VPN That’s Great for Beginners

In my speed tests, Surfshark’s performance was pretty good. I found that it’s very fast on local servers, but not so great on distant ones. I didn’t experience such slowdowns with Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN.

4. Surfshark — Affordable VPN That’s Great for Beginners

Surfshark’s plans start at a very reasonable price of $1.99 / month, and all purchases are backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

Surfshark is an affordable and beginner-friendly VPN with good WireGuard support. It addresses WireGuard’s privacy problem using a double NAT system, has fast speeds on local servers, and includes great security features like IP Rotator. Surfshark’s subscriptions come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

5. Proton VPN — Great Privacy + Great Free Plan

protonvpn.com

Proton VPN is a very privacy-friendly WireGuard VPN that has a really good free plan. It uses a double NAT system to deal with the protocol’s privacy problem, has an audited no-logs policy, and uses full-disk encryption, which makes the data on its servers unreadable. And I like that you can choose between UDP and TCP when using WireGuard — most VPNs don’t give you the choice.

5. Proton VPN — Great Privacy + Great Free Plan

I like its free plan because it offers unlimited data (most free VPNs have restrictive data caps), but it’s a shame that it only includes servers in 5 countries, namely the US, the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, and Poland. Also, the free plan lacks streaming and P2P support and doesn’t provide access to the Secure Core servers that add an extra layer of privacy when using WireGuard.

Proton VPN’s plans start at $2.99 / month, and all of them come with a prorated 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

Proton VPN offers great privacy and one of the best free plans on the market. It uses a double NAT system to solve WireGuard’s privacy problem, lets you customize your WireGuard connection, has fast connection speeds, and provides good security. Proton VPN backs all of its plans with a prorated 30-day money-back guarantee.

Editors' Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group.

ExpressVPN has its own proprietary protocol called Lightway, which is better than WireGuard in many ways. It’s more lightweight, provides faster speeds (ExpressVPN is actually the fastest VPN on the market), is very secure, and has none of WireGuard’s inherent privacy issues. And, Lightway is also open-source and has been independently audited and confirmed.

Bonus. ExpressVPN — Best VPN With a WireGuard Alternative

ExpressVPN is a little pricey at $4.99 / month, but it’s well worth the cost because it’s the best VPN in 2024. All of its plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

ExpressVPN doesn’t use WireGuard, but it has its proprietary Lightway protocol, which is actually faster and more private. ExpressVPN’s plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Testing Methodology: Comparison & Ranking Criteria

In my search for the best VPNs that support the WireGuard protocol, I followed our comprehensive VPN testing methodology. Below, you’ll find the exact criteria I used when deciding which VPNs to recommend. All of them passed real-world tests for speed, security, and ease of use.

  • I only chose VPNs with good WireGuard support. Each VPN mentioned in this list supports WireGuard (or a WireGuard substitute) for Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS, and provides access to WireGuard within the app instead of necessitating a manual setup.
  • I found VPNs that address the privacy concerns with WireGuard. WireGuard is built for fast speeds and strong security but isn’t the greatest for privacy, as it logs the identity of VPN users by saving IP addresses. I only recommend VPNs that have addressed WireGuard’s inherent privacy issues.
  • I picked VPNs with fast speeds. All VPNs will slow down your internet connection to some extent due to the encryption process and the distance that your traffic needs to travel to pass through the VPN server. However, the best VPNs still allow you to maintain very fast speeds.Testing Methodology: Comparison & Ranking Criteria
  • I looked for strong privacy and security features. The VPNs I recommend all include industry-standard privacy and security features, like 256-bit AES encryption, a strict no-logs policy, and a kill switch that disconnects you from the internet if your VPN connection drops to prevent accidental leaks.Testing Methodology: Comparison & Ranking Criteria
  • I only recommend VPNs that provide good value. The VPNs on my list all offer reasonably- priced plans, a minimum of 6 device connections, and come with a money-back guarantee.

Top Brands That Didn’t Make the Cut

  • PrivateVPN. PrivateVPN is a highly affordable VPN that’s great for bypassing censorship. However, while it does support the WireGuard protocol, you must set it up manually, which is time-consuming.
  • TunnelBear. TunnelBear is a beginner-friendly VPN that supports WireGuard and allows unlimited simultaneous connections. However, it’s not as fast as the VPNs I recommend. Additionally, I don’t like that it doesn’t come with a money-back guarantee.
  • VyprVPN. VyprVPN is a secure and easy-to-use VPN that supports the WireGuard protocol. But it’s not as feature-rich as the VPNs on my list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What VPNs support WireGuard?

Many top VPNs support the WireGuard protocol. Private Internet Access is my top VPN with WireGuard in 2024 since it’s highly customizable, provides fast speeds and strong security, supports the WireGuard protocol on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and addresses WireGuard’s privacy issues by randomly assigning you an IP address so that your real IP address isn’t revealed.

Is WireGuard safer than OpenVPN?

Both WireGuard and OpenVPN are very secure VPN protocols. However, WireGuard is designed for faster speeds, while OpenVPN is better for user privacy and bypassing censorship. Most of the VPNs on my list provide access to both protocols.

Does NordVPN support WireGuard?

Yes, NordVPN‘s proprietary protocol, NordLynx, is built around the WireGuard protocol. To address the privacy issues that surround the protocol, NordVPN uses a double NAT system, ensuring that no identifiable user information is stored on its servers.

Does ExpressVPN use WireGuard?

No, ExpressVPN doesn’t use the WireGuard protocol. Instead, it uses its own proprietary Lightway protocol, which has a few key advantages over the WireGuard protocol since it’s faster and promotes better user privacy. Also, it supports obfuscation — most VPNs don’t provide obfuscation via the WireGuard protocol.

"But it wasn’t built with privacy in mind. The protocol assigns you the same IP address every time you connect to a server, which allows it to be faster than other protocols. However, this also means that the server has to keep logs of your IP address, which is information that can effectively identify your geolocation, including your country and region."

Can you please explain what you mean by this?
Which address are you talking about - my router's external (WAN) address?

That would be the only address useful for geolocation; but this address is not "assigned by the protocol" - it's assigned by my ISP, and Wireguard can do nothing about this (same as OpenVPN and IPsec).

And *of course* a VPN gateway has to keep track of the IP address where a VPN connection originated - otherwise it wouldn't be able to send answering network packets back to the VPN client; but there's NO reason to keep any of this information in log files (again - the same is true for OpenVPN and IPsec).

And if you don't log this address, it will be *gone* shortly after closing the tunnel (perhaps after some timeout).

So I don't quite see why WireGuard (even in its basic form, as implemented in the Linux kernel) should be any less "privacy friendly" than the older, more established protocols!
