DroidVPN VPN Review 2024 — What They Won’t Tell You

DroidVPN is a terrible VPN that’s dangerous for your privacy, so I strongly recommend avoiding it. There are much better options out there in 2024 like ExpressVPN.

There’s really nothing good to say about DroidVPN. It doesn’t say if it provides encryption, it’s missing a kill switch, which is an essential VPN security feature, and it logs your IP address. And when I ran leak tests, DroidVPN leaked my DNS data.

In addition, there are tons of other issues that raise a red flag. DroidVPN doesn’t work with most top streaming sites, has noticeable slowdowns, only allows torrenting on servers in 2 countries, and doesn’t publish its server count. Plus, it’s missing extra features like split-tunneling and advanced security features like perfect forward secrecy. Also, it only has Android and Windows apps and both of these apps are hard to use (the Windows app doesn’t work most of the time), and customer support is basically nonexistent.

DroidVPN Full Review

After spending a few weeks testing DroidVPN, there is no doubt in my mind that it’s one of the worst VPNs I have ever tested.

DroidVPN doesn’t even protect your traffic (which is exactly what a VPN should do) — I have tested 50+ VPNs and this is the first VPN that leaked my DNS data (meaning my ISP could see my browsing traffic). The VPN also doesn’t have a kill switch (so it could leak your IP address) and logs your IP address (and DroidVPN says it might share it with third parties).

DroidVPN only has apps for Android and Windows, and I don’t like either one of them —  the Windows app barely even works (in my tests, it didn’t let me connect to any servers 50% of the time).

There are honestly much better VPNs out there like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access that are both safe to use, have very easy-to-use apps for all platforms, and provide significantly better value.

DroidVPN Features

DroidVPN uses the OpenVPN protocol, which normally includes 256-bit AES encryption — however, I was never able to confirm this claim. DroidVPN doesn’t provide any information about encryption on its website, and despite repeated attempts to contact DroidVPN’s customer service to get an answer, I never received a reply. I think it’s always a major concern when a VPN fails to clearly state it uses 256-bit AES encryption.

DroidVPN doesn’t collect your traffic (visited sites and downloaded files). But it logs your IP address (which reveals your actual location) — which defeats the purpose of using a VPN to begin with (a VPN should protect your privacy without collecting your data).

And DroidVPN doesn’t have a kill switch, which disables online access if the VPN connection drops — without a kill switch, your real IP address will be exposed if the VPN disconnects. There’s an in-app option to auto-reconnect to the VPN if the connection fails, but that’s not a substitute for a kill switch.

DroidVPN also doesn’t say if it provides protection against IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. I ran multiple leak tests on servers in 10+ countries — I didn’t experience IPv6 and WebRTC leaks, but DroidVPN leaked my DNS data in every test (so my ISP could see what sites I was browsing even though I was connected to a VPN).

What’s more, DroidVPN doesn’t have extra features that other top competitors include, such as split-tunneling (lets you choose which apps use the VPN and which apps use your local network) and an ad blocker. It’s also missing advanced security features like RAM-only servers and perfect forward secrecy.

Overall, DroidVPN lacks essential VPN security features and is dangerous to use because it leaks DNS data. All of the top VPNs on the market in 2024 provide significantly better security features.

DroidVPN Privacy & Security

DroidVPN’s privacy policy states that it doesn’t log the sites you visit and files you download, but I don’t like at all how it logs your IP address, which is terrible for protecting your privacy. It also collects your email address (for creating accounts and communicating with you) and connection timestamps and data usage (which are used to improve its service).

DroidVPN is based in the Philippines, which is not part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances (a group of countries that share surveillance data with each other). That said, DroidVPN says it will comply with user data requests from government authorities or other third parties — so it could hand over your IP address if asked.

Overall, DroidVPN is horrible for privacy — it doesn’t monitor your traffic but collects your IP address. Also, if needed, it will share user data with the authorities. Top VPNs like ExpressVPN and NordVPN have very strict no-logs policies that also have passed independent security audits.

DroidVPN Speed & Performance

I ran speed tests using my Windows 10 PC on a server in all 10 countries where DroidVPN has a server to determine my average VPN speeds. I had decent speeds on nearby servers in Germany (I’m from Romania) and experienced noticeable slowdowns on distant servers in the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

First, I ran a speed test without being connected to the VPN to get a baseline for my local network’s speeds. Unfortunately, DroidVPN doesn’t have a quick-connect feature that automatically connects you to the fastest server location for your country. It also doesn’t have servers in my country (Romania). So I manually connected to a nearby server in Germany. Finally, I connected to a distant server in the US. Here are my results:

On nearby servers in Germany, websites loaded in 2 seconds and HD videos loaded instantly, but I experienced minor buffering at the start. On distant servers in the US, websites took 4–5 seconds to load and HD videos loaded in 2 seconds, but there was noticeable buffering while skipping through them, and I experienced high ping while playing online games.

Overall, DroidVPN provided me with decent speeds on both nearby and distant servers, but I also experienced noticeable slowdowns. Top VPNs like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access provide significantly faster speeds for browsing, streaming, gaming, and more.

DroidVPN Servers & IP Addresses

DroidVPN has servers in 10 countries, which is significantly lower than other top VPN providers like ExpressVPN (105 countries) and Private Internet Access (91 countries). DroidVPN mostly has servers in North America, East and Southeast Asia, and Europe, so users in other parts of the world will have a hard time finding nearby servers for fast speeds.

I also don’t like that DroidVPN doesn’t publish its total number of servers. I contacted DroidVPN’s support team about this, but they didn’t reply to my questions. Most of the top VPNs release their server count to the public, which provides more transparency.

DroidVPN has dedicated P2P servers, but only in 2 countries (Luxembourg and the Netherlands). Top competitors have much better P2P server networks — for example, ExpressVPN allows torrenting on servers in 105 countries.

Overall, DroidVPN’s server network is too small, which makes it difficult to find nearby servers to get fast speeds. Also, the server count isn’t public, and there are only P2P servers in 2 countries.

DroidVPN Streaming & Torrenting

DroidVPN is really bad for streaming — my colleague in the UK got it to work with BBC iPlayer, but my US colleagues couldn’t watch Netflix US, Amazon Prime US, Disney+ US, or Max.

If you want a better streaming VPN, I recommend ExpressVPN — it consistently works with Netflix, claims to work with 100+ other streaming apps, and provides blazing-fast streaming speeds.

DroidVPN is also terrible for torrenting — it only allows P2P traffic on servers in 2 countries (Luxembourg and the Netherlands). If you torrent on other servers, DroidVPN will terminate your account. What’s more, DroidVPN isn’t safe for torrenting anyway since it lacks a kill switch, logs your IP address, and also leaks your DNS data.

If you need a good torrenting VPN, I recommend ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access — both providers allow P2P traffic on all of their servers and also come with world-class security features.

Overall, DroidVPN only works with BBC iPlayer and isn’t compatible with other top sites like Netflix and Amazon Prime. When it comes to torrenting, it only allows P2P traffic on servers in 2 countries.

DroidVPN Plans & Pricing

DroidVPN has a free plan and paid monthly and yearly plans. It doesn’t allow simultaneous connections — most top VPNs allow at least 5 simultaneous connections (while Private Internet Access allows unlimited connections).

DroidVPN’s free plan is really bad — you only get access to servers in 6 countries (the US, the UK, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Singapore, and the Netherlands) and you’re limited to 100 MB per day, which isn’t even enough for 1–2 hours of web browsing. Upgrading to DroidVPN’s paid plans, which start at $2.99 / month, gets you unlimited data and access to servers in more countries. Despite being very affordable, DroidVPN’s paid plans are not worth it — top competitors like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access provide significantly better value and offer excellent security.

I also hate how DroidVPN only has a 7-day money-back guarantee. In addition, you need to use less than 2 GB of data to qualify for a refund — it’s very easy to go over the data limit by watching 3–4 hours of HD videos on YouTube or browsing the web for 3–4 days. And DroidVPN doesn’t display or warn you about your data usage in relation to the refund.

Overall, DroidVPN’s free plan isn’t impressive and its paid plans aren’t worth it. There are much better VPNs out there in 2024 that provide superior value.

DroidVPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

DroidVPN has apps for Android and Windows. If you want a VPN that also offers top-notch apps for iOS, macOS, and Linux, I recommend ExpressVPN.

DroidVPN’s Android app isn’t user-friendly — the design looks very dated and unintuitive. Also, the server list lacks a search field, so you need to scroll through the entire server list to find your desired server. And, I really can’t stand how DroidVPN lacks clear explanations for its settings. For example, it tells you that Enable compression will compress the data tunneled through the VPN, but it doesn’t say how that improves your VPN connection.

And DroidVPN’s Windows app is just terrible. It doesn’t come with an installer. Instead, you have to download it from a third-party site, extract the VPN’s files from an archive, and then copy the files to your folder of choice, which is inconvenient and absolutely not easy for beginners. And when I used the Windows app, I couldn’t even connect to a server 50% of the time.

Overall, DroidVPN’s mobile and desktop apps are difficult to use and navigate, and the Windows app doesn’t always work.

DroidVPN Customer Support

DroidVPN provides terrible customer support — it only has a few frequently asked questions (FAQs) and email support, which is unresponsive.

DroidVPN’s FAQs are limited and sometimes incorrect. For instance, one FAQ wrongly states PayPal as a payment option when it’s not.

DroidVPN claims to provide email support, but I sent 5+ emails and never received a reply.

Overall, DroidVPN’s support is pretty much non-existent — its support section is very limited, there’s no live chat, and email support is unresponsive. Other top VPNs provide significantly better customer support.

Is DroidVPN Any Good in 2024?

I don’t recommend DroidVPN because it’s not safe to use — there are much better providers on the market like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access.
