Short on time? Here’s how to unban users on Twitch in 2026:

  • A single user: Use the “/unban [username]” command. Type “unban” in the chat and enter the username to unban that user.
  • Multiple users: Find Banned Chatters in the Creator dashboard. Go to Settings > Moderation and unban users from there.

There are a couple of ways to unban someone on Twitch, and they’re all pretty straightforward. In this article, I explain all the ways (and steps) you can reverse the ban you’ve enforced on someone on your Twitch channel — and briefly explain what happens after a user is unbanned.

I’ll also cover how to troubleshoot if the unbanning process isn’t working, and how to remove a temporary timeout on a user.

Note: if you’re looking to get unbanned on Twitch, you’ll need to create a new account with a VPN to hide your IP address. There are a lot of great VPNs on the market in 2026, but my favorite VPN is ExpressVPN as it has a large server network and regularly updates its IP addresses. Note that using a VPN with Twitch may violate its Terms of Use. At SafetyDetectives, we recommend following all rules and regulations.

Editor's Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group.

How to Unban Someone on Twitch in 2026

Twitch gives you several options when it comes to unbanning a user, and the best choice depends on whether you’re interested in unbanning one or more users and if you know the exact username of the person you want to unban.

Option 1: Chat Command

Should you only want to unban a user or two and you know their exact usernames, the easiest route to take is chat commands. Here’s how to unban someone from your channel’s chat:

  1. Go to your Channel. Click on your profile icon in the top-right corner of the screen and select Channel.

Pro Tip: Make sure you’re not keeping the brackets [ ] when typing in the username.

  1. Confirm the unban. If the user’s been unbanned from your channel, you’ll see a message confirming that in the chat.

Option 2: Creator Dashboard

If you don’t know the user’s exact username or you want to unban several people at once, you can remove bans through the Creator Dashboard — the alternative is typing username by username, but this is very inconvenient.

To unban someone through the Creator Dashboard, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Creator Dashboard. Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Creator Dashboard from the dropdown menu.

  1. Find the user you want to unban. Scroll through the list of banned users to find the one you’re looking for. If you know part of their username, you can use the search bar, which will bring up the full username. Then, click on the trash icon to unban them.

Option 3: Mod View

Twitch’s Mod View offers a more detailed interface for handling unbans. Here, you can unban a user from Mod Actions. This is convenient if you’ve recently banned the user since this tab keeps track of all actions you’ve taken related to your channel.

To do that:

  1. Open your chat window. You can get there by following steps 1 and 2 here. From the chat window, click on the sword icon to enter Mod View.

  1. Go to Mod Actions. It’s in the lower-left corner of your Mod View, where you’ll find different actions you’ve taken, like bans, unbans, deleted messages, etc.

  1. Find the banned user and unban them. If the ban is recent, you probably won’t have to scroll down too much. Once you click on their username, a window will pop up on the right with the option to unban them.

How To Remove a Temporary Ban on Twitch

If you’ve only timed out a user (and haven’t banned them from the channel) and wish to lift the restriction, you can use the “/timeout” command:

  1. Access your chat. Open your Twitch channel’s chat window. Follow steps 1 and 2 here to find it when you first open Twitch.

  1. Enter the Untimeout command. Type the following command in the chat: “/untimeout” and add the username. Then, press Enter. Remember not to use the brackets [ ] when typing the actual username!

  1. Confirm you’ve lifted the timeout. You’ll see a message in the chat confirming your action.

What Happens After You Unban Someone on Twitch?

Unbanned users can immediately participate in chat. However, some limitations might still apply to them, depending on your stream’s settings:

  • Slow mode. If slow mode is active, the unbanned user will be restricted just like everyone else. They’ll have to wait a specified amount of time before sending messages.
  • Follower/sub-only chat. If your channel is in follower-only or subscriber-only mode, the unbanned user will only be able to chat if they haven’t rage-quit after their ban and are still subscribed to or following your channel.
  • AutoMod, blocked words & expressions. While unbanning lifts the ban, it doesn’t override your stream’s broader chat rules. For example, if you have set up AutoMod to filter certain phrases in the chat or stop spam, the messages will still get filtered through those, and a potential ban is imminent if they break the chat rules.

Troubleshooting Unbanning Issues on Twitch

Sometimes, even after you’ve unbanned a user on Twitch, they may still have issues participating in your channel. Whether the user still can’t chat or your mod tools aren’t responding, here’s how to troubleshoot the most common unbanning problems on Twitch.
