Managing digital clutter has become a growing challenge, with users juggling hundreds of online accounts, endless email subscriptions, and hidden data leaks. Yorba was created to simplify this process—helping people take back control of their digital lives.

In this SafetyDetectives interview, Chris Zeunstrom, Founder and CEO of Yorba, shares how his background in experience design, product strategy, and consumer advocacy inspired him to launch a platform that makes digital cleanup effortless. From tackling hidden subscriptions to guiding users through account deletions and data breaches, Chris discusses the biggest threats to digital privacy and how Yorba empowers people to stay ahead of them.

Can you introduce yourself and talk about what inspired you to found Yorba?

I’m Chris Zeunstrom, the Founder and CEO of Yorba. My background is in experience design, product strategy, and consumer advocacy, and I’ve always been fascinated by how technology empowers us but also overwhelms us. The idea for Yorba came from a simple frustration. We sign up for countless online accounts, but the process is unnecessarily complicated when we want to clean up our digital lives.

I started Yorba to help people regain control by deleting unused accounts, reducing unwanted emails, tracking paid subscriptions, or keeping their personal information from being endlessly shared and sold. The average person has over 246 online accounts (per our 2024 State of Clutter Report), many of which they’ve forgotten. These accounts pose real risks, from data breaches to unwanted tracking. Yorba helps simplify digital cleanup, making it easy for people to protect their privacy and declutter their online presence.

What are the flagship features of the Yorba platform?

Yorba offers a range of tools designed to help people manage their digital footprint. Our flagship features include:

  • Delete Desk – The largest free directory of online account deletion instructions. If you want to delete an old account, we help you find exactly how to do it—saving time and frustration.
  • Subscription Tracking –  We help users identify all the subscriptions they’re paying for, receive alerts about upcoming charges, and cancel unused services.
  • Digital Footprint Scanning & Reducing – We help users uncover accounts, services, and personal data linked to their email addresses so they can take action—such as deleting accounts, stopping data sharing, or reducing their online exposure.
  • Data Breach Monitoring – Users can check if their data has been leaked in a breach and take steps to secure their accounts.
  • Email Inbox Cleanup – We make it easy to reduce unwanted emails and unsubscribe from mailing lists that clutter your inbox.

Everything we build is designed to help people streamline their online presence while keeping privacy at the forefront.

What are the most significant risks of keeping old, inactive online accounts, and why should users prioritize deleting them?

Old accounts might seem harmless, but they’re one of the most significant risks to personal privacy. Here’s why:

  • Data Breaches – The company still holds your personal information even if you don’t use an account. If they suffer a breach, your data could be exposed. In 2024 alone, more than 26 billion records were leaked online.
  • Identity Theft & Fraud – Hackers often target inactive accounts because they’re less likely to have updated security settings. These accounts can be used to reset passwords, access others, or even commit fraud in your name.
  • Unwanted Tracking – Many companies collect and share data after you stop using their services. The fewer accounts you have, the less your data is floating around.
  • Increased Digital Footprint – The more accounts you have, the more places your personal information is stored. Digital footprint scanning helps users identify forgotten accounts and remove them before they become liabilities.

Deleting unused accounts is one of the easiest ways to improve online security and reduce digital footprint. That’s why we created Yorba and Delete Desk—to make it simple for anyone to find an account and follow deletion instructions to remove themselves from that relationship with that platform.

Many companies use deceptive tactics to keep users subscribed. What are the most common tricks, and how can people avoid them?

Unfortunately, companies don’t make it easy to cancel subscriptions. Some common deceptive tactics include:

  • “Dark Patterns” – Tricky design tactics that confuse users or make canceling more difficult. One example is hiding the cancel button deep within multiple settings pages.
  • Free Trials That Auto-Renew – Many services require a credit card for a free trial, then automatically start billing you after the trial ends—often without a clear reminder.
  • Price Hikes Without Notice –  Some services quietly increase their prices, banking on the fact that most users won’t notice until they see a higher charge on their bank statement.
  • Forced Customer Service Calls – Some companies require you to call or even mail a letter to cancel, making the process intentionally frustrating.

To avoid these traps, I recommend using subscription tracking tools like Yorba, which notify you of upcoming charges and make it easy to cancel. Also, using virtual credit cards for free trials can prevent unwanted charges if you forget to cancel. Privacy.com has personally helped me in that regard.

Many privacy-focused tools require sharing even more personal data. How does Yorba balance functionality with user privacy and security?

This is a massive issue in the privacy space—many so-called “privacy tools” require users to hand over even more personal data. At Yorba, we take a different approach:

  • No Tracking & No Ads – Unlike many platforms, we don’t track your activity or sell your data. We operate on a simple, transparent business model, offering a free plan and a premium subscription for those who want additional features.
  • Minimal Data Collection – We only collect what’s necessary to provide our services. For example, if you use subscription tracking, you connect your bank account via an encrypted, read-only integration. We never store login credentials.
  • Complete User Control – Everything on Yorba is opt-in. Users choose what they want to track or delete; they can remove their data and take it with them at any time.
  • Privacy by Design – Our digital footprint scanning feature only shows users where their data is linked. We don’t store any additional data beyond what’s needed for the service.

Our goal is to empower people, not exploit them. Privacy and transparency are at the core of our work.

Looking ahead, what are the biggest digital privacy threats people should prepare for, and how can they stay ahead of them?

Digital privacy threats are constantly evolving, but some of the biggest challenges we see coming include:

  • AI-Powered Scams – Fraudsters use AI to generate more convincing phishing emails, deepfake calls, and text scams. It’s getting harder to tell what’s real. It’s wild out there.
  • Increased Data Leaks – With billions of records already leaked, future breaches will likely expose even more personal data. Therefore, it is critical to delete old accounts and monitor for breaches.
  • More Aggressive Tracking – Companies are finding new ways to track users, even without cookies. Browser fingerprinting and AI-driven profiling are on the rise.
  • Subscription Overload – More services are shifting to subscription models, which can lead to financial strain if people don’t stay on top of them.
  • Growing Digital Footprints – People’s data is spread across more platforms than ever. Without active management, their online presence keeps expanding, increasing their risk of identity theft, spam, and unwanted surveillance.

To avoid these risks, people should regularly audit their accounts, use strong passwords, and be cautious of suspicious links and messages. Yorba can help by scanning their digital footprint, tracking subscriptions, cleaning up their online login account presence, removing all the mailing list email noise from their inboxes, and alerting them to new data breaches.
