Borderless VPN Review: Quick Expert Summary

Borderless VPN is pretty secure, has pretty fast speeds, and supports torrenting on all servers, but there are better VPNs out there in 2024, like ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access.

Borderless VPN protects user data with industry-standard VPN security features like 256-bit AES encryption and a strict no-logs policy. It’s also easy to use and has a web protection feature that blocks ads, trackers, and malicious websites.

However, Borderless VPN has a lot of areas for improvement. It doesn’t work with any of the popular streaming services, it’s missing a kill switch and advanced security features like split-tunneling, perfect forward secrecy, RAM-only servers, and WebRTC leak protection. Plus, Borderless VPN doesn’t have a native app for macOS, it doesn’t release the number of servers in its network, it doesn’t work in restrictive countries like China, and the only customer support it has is email support and very basic FAQs/troubleshooting guides.

Borderless VPN allows 5 simultaneous connections with a single account and offers reasonably-priced monthly, 6-month, and yearly plans. Borderless VPN backs all plans with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Borderless VPN Full Review

Borderless VPN Full Review

I spent weeks researching and testing Borderless VPN to see how it compares to other top VPNs on the market. Overall, I can say Borderless VPN is good for securely browsing the web and torrenting, but that’s about it.

Borderless VPN protects user data with industry-standard VPN security features and has easy-to-use native apps for Android, iOS, and Windows (but not for Macs).

However, Borderless VPN doesn’t work with popular streaming apps, and it doesn’t have advanced security features like perfect forward secrecy or extra features like split-tunneling.

Overall, Borderless VPN is secure, has easy-to-use apps, and is good for torrenting and browsing the web, but it lacks a lot of features I expect from a high-end VPN in 2024.

Borderless VPN Features

Borderless VPN has the following industry-standard VPN security features:

  • 256-bit AES encryption — Protects user data with the same encryption used by banks and governments.
  • No-logs policy — Doesn’t collect data about the websites you visit or the files you download.

Unfortunately, Borderless VPN does not have a kill switch, despite its claim in its FAQs that all apps have a kill switch option. A kill switch is considered an industry-standard security feature to protect your data if the VPN connection drops suddenly, so it’s pretty concerning that the VPN doesn’t have one.

Borderless VPN uses the OpenVPN and IKEv2 connection protocols. They’re both fast and secure, but Wireguard is faster — Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN both have WireGuard, so I’d like to see Borderless VPN add WireGuard in the future.

Borderless VPN includes good DNS and IPv6 leak protection, but it doesn’t have WebRTC protection (unlike ExpressVPN, which has full built-in leak protection).

Even still, my leak tests produced some concerning results. For example, when I was connected to the New York US server, my IP address came in as New Jersey, and my DNS server showed New Jersey as well as Norway. When I was connected to the UK server, I had an English IP address, but my DNS address showed 3 different locations. In fact, every location I tested had Norway come up as a DNS address. This is pretty concerning since top VPNs like Private Internet Access and ExpressVPN always show the same DNS address location as the IP address you’re using.

Borderless VPN also provides web protection — This built-in feature automatically blocks ads, trackers, and prevents you from visiting malicious websites. In my testing, Borderless VPN’s web protection prevented most ads from loading on websites, which allowed pages to load quicker and they were less cluttered. However, Private Internet Access and ProtonVPN have ad blockers that block virtually every ad on a website.

Borderless VPN Privacy & Security

Borderless VPN has a strict no-logs policy — it doesn’t collect any personal data, like the websites you visit or the files you download. The Borderless VPN privacy policy states that it only collects your email address (for account purposes).

I like all of the terms of Borderless VPN’s privacy policy, but I would also like to see the provider conduct an independent audit of the no-logs policy to prove it doesn’t store logs of user data — VPNs like ExpressVPN and TunnelBear have had their no-logs policies independently audited and verified.

Borderless VPN Privacy & Security

Borderless VPN is based in Norway, which is a member of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliance (a group of countries that share intelligence data). But even if the government requested user data, Borderless VPN wouldn’t have any to turn over.

Overall, Borderless VPN has a strict no-logs policy that doesn’t collect or store personal data.

Borderless VPN Speed & Performance

I ran speed tests on my Windows PC on a server in all 15 countries where Borderless VPN has a server. While I had the fastest speeds when connected to a local server, websites loaded pretty fast, and I never experienced any buffering when streaming HD videos across all of Borderless VPN’s servers.

First I ran a speed test without being connected to a VPN server to determine my baseline speed. Borderless VPN doesn’t have a quick connect feature that automatically connects you to the closest server based on your location (unlike ExpressVPN), but it was easy to manually select a VPN server from the server list. I chose a local server (I am in the US) and ran another speed test and then connected to a distant server in Japan.

Borderless VPN Speed & Performance

When connected to a local server, my speeds decreased by around 20%, which is pretty good — websites loaded in 1-2 seconds, HD videos on YouTube played without buffering, and I downloaded a 10 GB torrent file in about 30 minutes, which is decent.

When I connected to a distant server in Japan, my speeds decreased by about 26%. I was still able to watch HD videos without buffering, but my ping (the time it takes the request to reach the VPN server) was much higher and sometimes it would take 2-4 seconds for videos to start.

Overall, Borderless VPN maintains pretty fast speeds — even when connected to a distant VPN server.

Borderless VPN Servers & IP Addresses

Borderless VPN has an unspecified number of servers located in 15 countries. I reached out to customer support to try and clarify how many servers it has, but they still didn’t provide me with a specific number — I was told there are multiple servers at each location.

Plus, I find this hard to believe as I was given the exact same IP address every time I connected to a country’s server, which is alarming as most VPNs have dozens, hundreds, or thousands of IP addresses per location/country. Perhaps even more concerning is that I was given a French IP address while connected to the German server and had the exact same Lithuania IP when connected on my phone and laptop simultaneously.

Another drawback of Borderless VPN is its lack of servers in all major regions. The majority of its server locations are in Europe — North America only has 2 server locations (both in the US), and there are none in Africa, Oceania, or South America. This leaves many people without a nearby server to connect to for the fastest speeds and prevents users from accessing geo-restricted content in certain regions. I prefer VPNs with servers located all over the world like CyberGhost VPN (servers in 100 countries) and ExpressVPN (servers in 105 countries).

Borderless VPN offers dedicated IPs at an extra cost. Dedicated IPs are IP addresses assigned only to you, and they are good for websites that may block you if they detect your account is being used with multiple IP addresses. However, getting a dedicated IP address is pretty time-consuming — Borderless VPN requires users to contact a customer support representative to request one, and then you need to manually configure OpenVPN. Private Internet Access and CyberGhost VPN offer dedicated IP addresses at an additional cost and PrivateVPN has free dedicated IPs — and none of these VPNs require any inconvenient extra steps to get a dedicated IP (other than the original purchase).

However, I like how Borderless VPN allows P2P traffic on all its servers. I was able to download a small file on a server in all 15 Borderless VPN countries without any issues.

Overall, Borderless VPN has an unspecified number of servers in 15 countries. It offers dedicated IPs at an extra cost and allows P2P traffic on all its servers. However, its servers are unreliable (and mislabeled), and it doesn’t refresh its IPs nearly enough.

Borderless VPN Streaming & Torrenting

Borderless VPN is terrible for streaming. It doesn’t work with top streaming services like Hulu, Disney+, or Amazon Prime. Netflix worked for me in the US and some of my international colleagues in Poland and Denmark, but my colleague in the UK said he was blocked by the site when using the VPN’s UK server. Borderless VPN also worked with YouTube, and I was able to log into less-popular streaming sites like Crackle and Peacock.

Honestly, if you’re looking for the best VPNs for streaming, I recommend ExpressVPN or CyberGhost VPN — they both work with all of the popular streaming apps, have really fast speeds for uninterrupted streaming, and are easy to use.

Borderless VPN Streaming & Torrenting

Borderless VPN is good for torrenting. In addition to supporting torrenting on all its servers, it works with top torrenting apps like BitTorrent, Vuze, and uTorrent and includes port forwarding, which allows you to connect to more peers to get even faster download speeds.

However, my favorite VPNs for torrenting are ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access — they allow P2P traffic in more countries, have faster speeds, provide advanced security features, and offer cool extras like split-tunneling.

Overall, Borderless VPN doesn’t work with BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, and other top streaming sites (though it sometimes works with Netflix), but it allows torrenting on all of its servers and works with many torrent clients.

Borderless VPN Plans & Pricing

Borderless VPN has competitive monthly, 6-month, and yearly plans that start at $3.70 / month. All plans allow you to connect up to 5 simultaneous devices (the industry standard is 5-7 connections). It also offers a free 24-hour trial, but it’s not advertised anywhere (you have to go through the FAQ page to get to it), and it’s only an option on Windows.

Borderless VPN accepts credit/debit cards, PayPal, and cryptocurrencies. And all of Borderless VPN’s plans include a 14-day money-back guarantee, but I don’t like that the refund policy is not posted on the pricing page — I had to dig through the confusing Terms and Conditions section to confirm the refund policy (most VPNs are very transparent about their money-back guarantee).

While Borderless VPN is very affordable, it doesn’t provide anywhere near the same value as the top VPNs like ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, Proton VPN, or CyberGhost VPN — they all have faster speeds, better security features, better streaming support, and at least a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Borderless VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Borderless VPN Ease of Use: Mobile & Desktop Apps

Borderless VPN has simple and easy-to-use apps for Android, iOS, and Windows, but it lacks a native app for macOS — it requires manually configuring the macOS app using a third-party app.

While Borderless provides step-by-step instructions for installing its Mac app, this isn’t a user-friendly process. My top VPN pick for Mac users is ExpressVPN, which has an easy-to-install native app, is feature-rich, and provides very fast speeds.

All of the apps have pretty much the same interface and settings. Changing servers is incredibly easy and navigating through the apps is simple, but that’s mainly because Borderless VPN’s settings menu doesn’t offer much else except the basics. On iOS, the only setting you have is “Connect when needed”, and on Windows and Android, you can only enable/disable the Web Protection feature and switch between UDP and TCP OpenVPN ports.

Borderless VPN Customer Support

Borderless VPN Customer Support

Borderless VPN offers decent customer service with email support, as well as FAQs and troubleshooting guides. Unfortunately, there isn’t a live chat, so getting help quickly isn’t possible.

When I tested their email support, I got a reply within 12 hours, and their answers were detailed and clear. Some VPNs’ customer support takes more than 24 hours to respond, or give vague answers, so I was pretty satisfied with the response I got from Borderless VPN.

On the other hand, Borderless VPN’s FAQ page isn’t useful. It only covers simple topics around account problems, installation, subscriptions, and short explanations of features like protocols and encryption. The troubleshooting page isn’t much better — it has just 5 generic guides that cover topics like why you may have a slow connection or can’t bring up Netflix, and there are just 5 other guides for Windows users (but nothing for Android, iOS, and macOS). In contrast, top VPNs like ExpressVPN and CyberGhost VPN offer an extensive library of troubleshooting articles that cover a wide range of topics for all platforms.

Overall, Borderless VPN has decent customer support. It lacks in-depth online guides and FAQs, but its 24/7 live chat and email support representatives are knowledgeable and helpful.

Is Borderless VPN Any Good in 2024?

Borderless VPN has good security features and good speeds for torrenting and browsing, but there are honestly much better VPNs out there (like ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access).

Borderless VPN is terrible for streaming and doesn’t work with top streaming apps (like Hulu and Amazon Prime), it lacks a kill switch, and it doesn’t come with any advanced security features like perfect forward secrecy. Plus, Borderless VPN lacks a native app for macOS, it can’t bypass internet firewalls in restrictive countries, and it has a small server network that’s unreliable.

That being said, Borderless VPN protects user data with industry-standard VPN security features like 256-bit AES encryption, and a no-logs policy. And Borderless VPN includes a good ad blocker, which also blocks trackers and malicious websites.

Borderless VPN allows 5 connections, offers competitive monthly, 6-month, and yearly plans, and comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Borderless VPN keep user data logs?

No, Borderless VPN doesn’t store information about the sites you visit or the files you download. In fact, it only logs your email address.

Is Borderless VPN safe?

Yes, Borderless VPN protects your data with industry-standard VPN security features like 256-bit AES encryption and a no-logs policy. Also, it comes with DNS and IPv6 leak protection and web protection, which blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites.

However, Borderless VPN is missing security features like a kill switch, perfect forward secrecy, RAM-only servers, disk encryption, split-tunneling, and WebRTC leak protection. To get a VPN that comes with these security features, I recommend checking out our list of the top 10 VPNs in 2024.

But Borderless VPN lacks a kill switch and advanced security features like perfect forward secrecy, doesn’t have split-tunneling, is missing a native Mac app, and doesn’t work with any of the top streaming apps.
