What Key Features Does Malwarebytes Offer?

Malwarebytes is a pretty basic antivirus that comes with very few features. However, the features it does provide work well to safeguard your devices. They include:

  • Malware scanner — Scans your computer or mobile device to root out and remove all sorts of malicious software, including viruses, ransomware, trojans, spyware, worms, and more.
  • Real-time protection — Malwarebytes checks every file you access or download for any signs of malware.
  • Anti-phishing protection — Protects you from malicious websites that try to steal your personal information.
  • VPN (virtual private network) — Hides your actual IP address and encrypts your online activities from prying eyes.
  • Identity theft protection — Includes identity insurance, social media monitoring, and credit monitoring for US users.

Malwarebytes’s malware scanner detected and removed 95% of the malware samples from my computer, which is pretty good. That said, other brands like Norton and Bitdefender flagged every single malware file on my system.

It provides good anti-phishing protection via Malwarebytes’s free browser extension (called Browser Guard). It’s a solid tool that protects users from phishing scams, malware, pop-up ads, trackers, and PUPs. I tested Browser Guard by visiting a bunch of known phishing sites, and it blocked all but one of them. Still, I prefer Bitdefender’s anti-phishing protection, which blocked every site I tested it against.

Overall, Malwarebytes has a limited set of highly effective features, but it lacks extras like a password manager and parental controls. You can learn more about the program in our full Malwarebytes review, or you can try Malwarebytes now with a 50% discount.

How Good Is Malwarebytes at Blocking Malware and Internet Security Threats?

Malwarebytes is very good at stopping malware and other web-based threats from doing serious harm to your devices. To test it, I downloaded 1,000 malware samples onto my Windows PC. This packet included viruses, trojans, ransomware, rootkits, worms, cryptojackers, and more. When I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a scan, it removed 95% of these threats, including some that were missed by other antiviruses like Webroot. While this result is not bad, competitors like Norton and Bitdefender detected every piece of malware when I tested them against the same malware samples.

Browser Guard, the web protection tool, is also effective. It detected and blocked 98% of the phishing sites I tried to visit, including sites that Chrome, Firefox, and Safari failed to block. What’s more, it’s available as a free browser extension. That said, it’s not as good as Bitdefender, which blocked every phishing site I attempted to visit.

The mobile apps are also pretty decent. The Android version, for instance, provides most features included in the desktop app, plus extras like spyware protection. The iOS app, on the other hand, is quite limited but still gets you essentials like web protection, SMS filtering, ad blocking, and scam call blocking. In any case, both mobile apps are very easy to use.

Overall, Malwarebytes is effective against malware, phishing, and other threats. It’s also easy to use and has apps for all major platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
