In a world where even our homes are getting smarter, one company decided it was time for safes to catch up. The Space Safe, founded by Jim after struggling to find a truly modern and secure safe for his family, blends advanced technology with uncompromising physical protection.
In this exclusive interview with SafetyDetectives, Jim discusses how The Space Safe was created, what sets it apart from other smart safes, and how continuous innovation through features like biometric encryption, built-in cameras, and over-the-air updates is redefining the future of home security.
What inspired the original idea for creating The Space Safe?
When looking for a safe, there was nothing that was modern and had tech in it, and the safes that did have tech were super outdated tech. I did not consider those safes ‘modern’ just because they maybe had a fingerprint sensor, or if they had a basic app that had 0 functionality. My brother and sister in law used to keep things on their bedside table, until they were no longer there. I had to find them a solution that was good, and there was nothing. The main issue was either safes were secure but had no tech, or safes had some basic tech but were not secure products.
How do you ensure the safe’s cameras, sensors, and fingerprint reader remain reliable over time?
We work with large, established manufacturers that specialize in high-quality components and rigorous factory testing. Each electronic part is stress-tested and calibrated before shipping to us, and every safe undergoes additional self-checks before being packaged and shipped. If a component does fail, we replace it and back all electronics with a one-year warranty. To date, we have not seen any degradation in our safes. I do want to point out that we did encounter an issue early on where our fingerprint reader was heating up, and after several weeks of debugging, we resolved it with a software update.
From a software perspective, we are the only safe with over-the-air updates, which allows us to continuously improve performance and address issues proactively. Like any technology, components may wear over very long periods, but if replacement is ever needed, we will do our best to support and replace components for our customers.
What protections are in place to secure biometric and video data from breaches?
Fingerprints and PINs never leave the local device and are fully encrypted. If a user has a video subscription, footage is stored securely on AWS with encryption, and any temporary local copies are deleted immediately after upload. If there is no subscription, the system never records, and live streaming is only viewable in real time with end-to-end encryption, with nothing saved. This ensures biometric and video data remain protected from breaches.
How simple is it for non-technical users to set up and manage access features?
Setting up a digital safe for the first time is so complicated, which is why we set out to change it completely with our safes. We’re the first and only company to add a touchscreen to a safe, making the experience as user-friendly and intuitive as possible. Since people are already used to tablets and smartphones, they instantly understand how to set up and use the safe. Setting up The Space Safe is just like setting up an iPhone for the first time. You power it on, follow the steps on the screen, and you’re ready to go.
We offer two setup options: quick, which takes about 5 minutes to complete, or detailed, which takes about 15 minutes and covers most features. At the end of setup, we provide a short tutorial showing exactly how to access the safe. Because of the touchscreen, the entire process of using the safe and navigating the system is highly interactive and easy to understand. If you’d like, I’d be happy to share a video demo to show how simple it looks and feels.
In what ways does The Space Safe stand apart from traditional or smart safes?
The Space Safe stands apart because it’s the only safe that combines advanced hardware with a connected software ecosystem. Unlike traditional safes, which are basically just a box with a lock, or other so-called smart safes that offer very limited features without real technology, The Space Safe includes a touchscreen, built-in cameras, tamper sensors, biometric access, and a mobile app for real-time monitoring and control.
Best of all, we partnered with a super-secure lock company to provide an extra layer of physical protection that other safes simply don’t have. And since we’re the only safe with over-the-air updates, our technology actually improves over time instead of becoming outdated.
In short, while others provide only 5–20% of The Space Safe’s functionality, we deliver the complete package of hardware, software, security, and scalability. With The Space Safe, you stay connected and protected from anywhere in the world with our 40+ unique features.
What warranty and support do you offer if a key component fails?
We offer a one-year limited warranty on all electronics and key components, and if something fails, we replace it. For example, if someone takes a bat to the screen, that wouldn’t be covered, but if the screen stops working due to a failure, we will replace it. We also provide continuous software support through over-the-air updates, ensuring that even after purchase, your safe keeps improving with the latest features and security patches. At the end of the day, we’re in business because of our customers, and our goal is for them to keep using and trusting our products forever.
