Google is teaming up with Poland to advance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in crucial sectors like energy and cybersecurity.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw, where they announced a memorandum that establishes a “strategic partnership” to develop AI across the nation.
“We are excited to announce a new memorandum of understanding to use AI to drive economic growth and help transform sectors, including cybersecurity, health, and energy,” Pichai said at the news conference.
Pichai pointed out that Poland is already home to Google’s largest engineering hub, with over 2,000 employees.
Poland has been increasing its investment in both AI and defense in recent years. Last year, the country announced a $240 million investment to strengthen its competitiveness and security, particularly in the face of growing cyber threats from Russia. Additionally, Poland plans to increase its defense spending to 4.7% of GDP, which would make it the highest among NATO members.
As part of this new collaboration, Google is also investing $5 million over the next five years to expand digital skills training for young Poles. This initiative aims to reach around one million young people.
Prime Minister Tusk said these efforts will not only bolster Poland’s security but also contribute to the country’s economic development. Earlier this week, he also noted that international companies like Google and Microsoft are expected to invest about 650 billion zlotys ($160 billion) in Poland by 2025.
“When I invited Google to cooperate with Poland 11 years ago, I did not think that our cooperation would have such an impressive outcome as we have today,” he said. “[At] this campus, thousands of young people have had the chance to establish and run their startups. Thanks to their own talents, but [also] thanks to the help of Google, they managed to attract a lot of money for their ideas.”
Tusk further invited Google to join Poland’s efforts to simplify regulations, making it easier for businesses to operate and grow without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
