As digital spaces continue to evolve, the demand for seamless and authentic online identities is growing. Union Avatars is at the forefront of this transformation, offering cutting-edge solutions that bridge the gap between fragmented digital identities and immersive 3D environments. Founded with the vision of simplifying avatar creation and enhancing cross-platform portability, Union Avatars enables users to generate realistic 3D representations from a single 2D selfie.

SafetyDetectives recently had the opportunity to speak with Cai Felip, CEO and co-founder of Union Avatars, about the inspiration behind the company, its evolution, and how it is shaping the future of digital identity in gaming, enterprise applications, and the metaverse. In this exclusive interview, Felip shares insights into the company’s innovative technology, its approach to privacy and security, and the exciting future of AI-driven avatars.

What inspired you to start Union Avatars, and how has the company evolved since its launch?

I’ve always been fascinated by digital identity and how fragmented it is across different platforms. Before starting Union Avatars, I found it frustrating to manage multiple accounts, passwords, and profiles depending on where I was interacting online. I was already exploring decentralized and federated identity solutions, looking for ways to create a unified identity that could be carried seamlessly across platforms.

At the same time, I’ve been a gamer for most of my life, deeply engaged in 3D platforms. It felt like a natural transition to combine these two interests—identity management and 3D environments—into a project that would help people represent themselves more authentically in digital spaces. That’s how Union Avatars was born: as a way to create realistic avatars from a simple 2D selfie, making it easier for users to have a consistent yet flexible digital identity.

Since our launch, we’ve evolved significantly. In the beginning, we worked mostly with innovation and marketing teams, helping brands explore virtual spaces. But over time, we saw a shift—companies wanted more than just engagement; they wanted real, functional applications for avatars. Today, we focus more on enterprise solutions, offering an API and SDK that allow businesses to integrate realistic avatar creation seamlessly into their platforms. We’ve found strong traction in corporate environments where users need quick and efficient avatar solutions for virtual meetings, training, and digital identity applications.

How does Union Avatars differentiate itself in the growing market of avatar creation and digital identity solutions?

At Union Avatars, we focus on accessibility and portability, which sets us apart in the growing avatar market. Our technology allows users to create 3D avatars from just a 2D selfie in seconds, making the process effortless and highly accessible. Unlike many avatar solutions that require extensive manual customization, our automated system ensures a fast and high-quality result with minimal user effort.

Another key differentiator is our enterprise focus. While many companies target entertainment and gaming, we provide API and SDK solutions that allow businesses to integrate avatar creation into their platforms seamlessly. This has made us a strong choice for corporate environments, virtual meetings, training simulations, and digital fashion, where realistic avatars are essential for professional use.

We also prioritize cross-platform compatibility. Our avatars are ready to be used in any 3D platform, supporting multiple formats like VRM, FBX, GLB, and USD, ensuring they are compatible across different virtual worlds, games, and applications. This level of flexibility makes us stand out in an industry where many solutions are still locked into specific ecosystems.

Finally, our partnership-driven approach has played a significant role in our growth. Collaborations with brands like Mango and other industry leaders validate our approach and help push the boundaries of how avatars can be used not just for engagement, but also for e-commerce, digital fashion, and professional applications. We’re not just creating avatars; we’re shaping the future of digital identity in virtual spaces.

The metaverse is gaining traction across industries. How do you see Union Avatars contributing to this digital ecosystem?

Union Avatars is playing a critical role in making digital identities more fluid and personalized within the metaverse. As industries explore virtual spaces, there’s a growing need for realistic and adaptable avatars that allow users to seamlessly interact across different platforms. Our focus is on ensuring that users and businesses can easily integrate and utilize avatars for more immersive and meaningful experiences.

One of the biggest challenges in the metaverse today is identity fragmentation—users often have to create new avatars for each platform they join. At Union Avatars, we solve this by offering a single, portable digital identity that can be used across various virtual environments. Whether it’s for gaming, corporate meetings, e-commerce, or entertainment, our avatars are designed to adapt to different use cases while maintaining consistency.

Privacy and data security are critical in digital identity solutions. How does Union Avatars address these concerns while delivering innovative products?

At Union Avatars, privacy and data security are at the core of everything we do. We ensure that user data is processed securely and never stored beyond what is necessary. Our avatar creation system is designed to be privacy-first, meaning that once the 3D avatar is generated, the original selfie is not retained, minimizing risks related to data breaches.

We also implement strong encryption and compliance with GDPR and other data protection regulations to safeguard user information. Since we work with enterprises, we prioritize secure API and SDK integrations, allowing companies to use our technology without exposing sensitive user data. By balancing innovation with responsible data handling, we ensure that users can confidently create and use their digital identities without compromising their privacy.

What role do you see customizable avatars playing in professional settings like virtual events, remote work, or training simulations?

Customizable avatars are becoming an essential tool for professional environments, especially as virtual events, remote work, and training simulations continue to expand. They provide a sense of presence and identity in digital spaces, making interactions more engaging and personal compared to traditional video calls or text-based communication.

In corporate settings, avatars allow employees to maintain a professional yet flexible digital representation. Whether it’s attending virtual conferences, participating in remote meetings, or engaging in immersive training simulations, having a customizable avatar helps users feel more connected while respecting privacy and accessibility needs. Additionally, companies can create branded or standardized avatars to reinforce corporate identity in virtual spaces, ensuring a consistent and professional image across platforms.

As technology advances, what future innovations or integrations is Union Avatars exploring to stay at the forefront of the industry?

At Union Avatars, we are continuously exploring AI-driven advancements to make digital identity more interactive and intelligent. One of our key focuses is integrating avatars with AI Agents, this means users could have AI-powered avatars that assist them in meetings, guide training simulations, or even represent them in virtual spaces when they’re not present.

We’re also enhancing real-time facial tracking and animation, allowing avatars to reflect natural expressions and emotions for more immersive virtual interactions. Additionally, we’re strengthening cross-platform interoperability, ensuring that avatars can seamlessly move across different 3D platforms, games, and enterprise applications.
